Job description

Who We Are

Open Government Products (OGP) operates like a startup within the government; We are a fast-paced, dynamic team of engineers, designers, and product managers dedicated to public good. We autonomously identify opportunities to solve public problems using tech, rapidly prototype, and launch solutions—from citizen apps to automating public agency operations. Embracing an open-sourced and flat hierarchy, we cut through bureaucracy to focus on real-world, user-centric innovations that drive change.

The Team

You will be joining the data.gov.sg (DGS) team, which builds and operates Singapore’s national open data platform. DGS is a key gateway through which citizens, researchers, journalists, developers, and businesses discover, understand, and use government data to solve problems and inform decisions.

The team works at the intersection of data, product, and public good. We collaborate closely with government agencies that produce data, and with users who rely on that data for analysis, storytelling, research, and production systems. Our work spans across many dimensions of data accessibility: from ingestion and validation, to metadata definition, search and discovery, visualisation, APIs, and platform reliability.

As a platform team, we operate at scale and with long-term impact. You’ll work on problems such as improving data discoverability, ensuring data freshness, and building robust infrastructure that scales with Singapore's growing open data ecosystem. Through strong product thinking, technical rigour, and close partnership with agencies, we aim to raise the overall standard of data accessibility across Singapore, and ultimately help Singaporeans understand their country through data.

About the Role

We’re looking for a thoughtful and driven Senior Software Engineer to help build and evolve data.gov.sg. You'll be enhancing our existing infrastructure while independently exploring new opportunities to make government data more accessible and useful for all Singaporeans. This role is well-suited for someone who thrives in ambiguous problem spaces, cares deeply about data quality and accessibility, and enjoys building reliable, scalable platforms that empower others to make informed, evidence-based decisions.

Key Responsibilities

You will work with a competent cross functional team to perform the following

  • Design, develop, and deploy scalable production-ready software across the stack - from frontend components to backend services and infrastructure.

  • Write maintainable, readable, and performant code while participating in code reviews to ensure engineering quality.

  • Work closely with PMs, designers, and officers on the ground to identify opportunities, scope features, test hypotheses, and ship solutions that solve real pain points.

  • Write and review engineering documentation such as RFCs and technical specifications to improve knowledge sharing.

  • Set up robust monitoring, alerting, and testing practices to ensure our systems are production-ready and reliable.

  • Own projects end-to-end, from discovery and prototyping to deployment and iteration.

  • Contribute to the broader culture of continuous improvement across OGP.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript, React, and backend development (Next.js, Node.js or similar).

  • Experience designing REST APIs and working with PostgreSQL or other relational databases.

  • Excellent communication skills, especially in understanding and translating problems and requirements into software.

  • Strong product thinking and empathy for users - especially non-technical ones.

  • (Bonus) Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

  • (Bonus) Experience in startups or fast-paced environments; proven ability to succeed in dynamic settings and manage shifting priorities with sometimes challenging stakeholders.

Overall we look for people who have ability, initiative, good communication, and most importantly, a passionate heart for public good. Don’t hesitate to apply, even if you might not possess all the skills and qualifications!

Working at OGP

Ownership and Autonomy — Beyond technical tasks, this means having autonomy to voice opinions and suggest future directions. Building what you believe in drives the creation of great solutions.

Rapid Prototyping — We prioritize testing ideas over debating them, allowing us to identify problems quickly and convey possibilities to others. This fail-fast approach accelerates innovation.

Flexibility — We provide flexible work arrangements based on what works best for our team and its members, fostering a productive and supportive environment.

Continuous Learning — Drive professional growth by exploring new architectures, frameworks, and technologies. With dedicated yearly learning months and hackathons, continuous learning is essential as we tackle innovative ideas and challenges.

Projects OGP has worked on include:

ScamShield — iOS and Android mobile apps, enhanced in August 2024, help users check and report suspicious communications. The apps automatically filter known scams using an AI-powered machine learning classifier. An Admin Dashboard also allows police to verify reported scams.

ParkingSG — A mobile app alternative to parking coupons. It lets users pay, extend, and refund their parking sessions just using their phones.

RedeemSG — Helps the Singapore Government to create, send and track redemptions of digital vouchers easily.

COVID-19 Vaccination — A suite of systems built to enable Singapore's national vaccination campaign for COVID-19. This includes informational sites, appointment booking systems, and records management systems.

data.gov.sg — An open repository of all the Singapore Government's public data. It helps people understand the data using visualizations and articles, and provides real-time APIs for developers to use.

Isomer — Provides government agencies with an easy-to-deploy static website building and hosting service to create usable, secure and faster informational websites quickly.

FormSG — A form builder tool for agencies to self-service and create online forms that capture classified data, with the goal of replacing paper forms.

PaySG — Was developed to enable digital payments for government services, and was initially used for payments for COVID-19 swab tests and Stay-Home Notices for incoming travellers to Singapore.
